"Pa’s time"
(A song of beauty and terror)

Pa had always been a bit strange.

One warm summer’s night we were sitting on the verandah and suddenly he stood up and faced me.
“It’s time,” he said.

He unbuttoned his shirt and his fingers tore a great gaping hole in his chest, peeling back skin and ribs.

From out of the hole poured a thick cloud of bogong moths.
They kept coming, fluttering up into the sky in a corridor of powdery brown wings.

Pa’s body, his clothes and skin suit, fell to the verandah floor in a heap.

I guess I wait now, until it’s my time.
