"THE UNLOVED"

They walked into the woods.
And the further they went into the woods the darker it became.
And the darker it became the colder it got.
The trees were larger and closer together.
The path disappeared.

Still they walked deeper into the woods.
There were strange noises, something behind them following.
Then, quiet. Still they walked on.
They held hands and looked about in fear and wonder at the silence and the stillness and when they spoke they spoke in hushed voices until finally they came to a standstill.

“Here,” they agreed. “We’ll bury him here.”

And they opened the sack that they carried between them. And turned it upside down and out tumbled their little brother who squealed like a piglet as they dug the hole and buried him alive with only the worms to tell him stories and only the black beetles to offer him comfort.
